Christmas Puzzles – A Great Gift from Santa
I am a big believer in puzzles, and I think that every family needs a puzzle at Christmas. Santa, very kindly, leaves us one every year! This has become a bit of a tradition for us. When my youngest was three I remember him sorting the pieces by color, admittedly he thought that all the colors where called ‘blue’ but he did happily sit and put them in little piles.
There are several reasons why I think the puzzle is so good. Firstly, it doesn’t involve the television or a screen in any way at all. I do not think that every family should ban televisions, DSs and other gaming consoles, but sometimes they do seem to take over a bit. There is a constant flow of research which suggests that too much screen time affects the concentration of children. I can tell you from experience that puzzles definitely help with concentration. My eldest kid is not the easiest of children, at one point there was a suggestion that he may have ADHD – this did not turn out to be the case, but it did make me re-evaluate a lot of aspects of our lives. He has never had a long concentration span unless it involves riding his bike – but he will sit at a table in front of a puzzle nattering. Often after he has got bored with the puzzle he will continue to sit and talk or just move the pieces around aimlessly, but we have some of our longest conversations like this.
Seocndly, it can take as long as necessary. So often we are under pressure to finish things. Kids have to do their homework by a certain day, tidy their room by a certain time, parents have to get to the shops before they close; we live our lives within deadlines. With a puzzle, it can sit part done on a table for as long as you like. It is great for children to learn that sometimes you can take your time over something; that sometimes speed is not the important factor.
Thirdly, it allows everyone to have their own task within a team. Depending on the age of your children they will have difference abilities, and a puzzle will allow each child to focus on what they are capable of and not to worry about what they can’t manage. Even the smallest of children can put pieces in piles and sort colors.
Finally, it can be done as a family and the outlay is minimal. Since this is a family project it is important to get a picture which is suitable. I tend to get something which we can always natter about, but not something which the kids see as educational. I do rather like the Asterix puzzles. They are always quite fun and there is loads to talk about.
